Overview & Course Expectations

The curricula of all geometry classes at Westwood High School are consistent with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and are designed to prepare students for the geometry portion of the MCAS in mathematics.

All math courses at WHS provide students the opportunity to practice and improve their problem solving skills as specified in school-wide academic expectation #3 of the WHS Mission Statement.

School-wide expectations are that :

Major Areas of Study

Geometry : Students will analyze characteristics and properties of two-and three-dimensional geometric shapes and develop mathematical arguments about geometric relationships. They will specify locations and describe spatial relationships using coordinate geometry and other representational systems, analyze transformation and use symmetry to analyze mathematical situations. In addition, they will use visualization, spatial reasoning and geometric modeling to solve problems.

Topics Include : Points, Lines and Planes, Angles, Parallel Lines and Slope, Triangles, Logic and Proofs, Special Triangles, Medians, Bisectors, and Altitudes, Quadrilaterals, Similarity, Circles, Trigonometry
(Additional topics for levels 1 and/or 2 include patterns and inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning, trapezoids and kites, reflections, rotations, translations, and symmetry, conditionals/converses, geometric probability, vectors, and multi-step proofs.)

Measurement : Students will understand measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems, and processes of measurement. They will apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements.

Topics Include : Polygons and Areas, Solids.
